What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental problem needs to be seen the same day, but several situations do: severe or worsening tooth pain, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, a lost crown or filling that's causing pain, facial swelling, or an injury to the mouth or jaw. A rotten or badly decayed tooth is a slightly different case—decay by itself usually isn't an emergency, but if it comes with intense pain, visible swelling, or fever, that combination can mean the infection is spreading, and it's worth being seen right away rather than waiting.
ER, Urgent Care, or a Dentist? Where to Actually Go
It's a common question, and the honest answer is that hospitals and urgent care centers usually aren't set up to treat the dental problem itself.
- Severe pain, knocked-out/broken tooth, lost filling or crown? Call our office for a same-day emergency visit
- Facial swelling with fever, or swelling affecting breathing or swallowing? Go to the ER immediately—this can be a sign of a spreading infection that needs urgent medical attention
- It's after our office hours, and the pain is manageable overnight? Contact us first thing when we open; over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress can help in the meantime
- Uncontrolled bleeding or a jaw injury from trauma? Go to the ER
An ER or urgent care visit can manage pain, prescribe antibiotics for an infection, or stabilize a serious injury, but they typically can't do the actual dental work—pull a tooth, place a filling, or fix a crown. That part still requires a dentist, which is why calling us directly is usually the faster way to actually resolve the problem, not just numb it temporarily.
What Happens When You Call Us
We'll ask a few quick questions to understand what's going on and get you in as soon as we can, often the same day. At your visit, we'll focus first on relieving your pain—with local anesthetic or sedation if needed—before deciding whether a filling, crown, extraction, or root canal is the right long-term fix.
If your case is complicated, we may schedule a brief follow-up once you're comfortable, rather than rushing a full treatment plan during an emergency visit.
After the Emergency: Restorative Care to Finish the Job
Emergency treatment often stops the pain, but fully restoring your smile sometimes requires a next step. We handle that in-house too—tooth-colored fillings, same-day CEREC® crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals, and dental implants for teeth that can't be saved. If your emergency involved a tooth we couldn't save, we'll talk through replacement options at the same visit, so you're not left with a gap longer than necessary.
Once You're Comfortable: Cosmetic & General Dentistry
Once any pain is resolved, we also offer teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, and Invisalign® for patients who want their smile to look as good as it feels, along with routine cleanings and exams that help you avoid returning for another emergency. If snoring or sleep interruptions are an issue, we also fit custom oral appliances as an alternative to a CPAP machine.
